Just got a message out of no where from one of the first campers I ever worked with 6 years ago, my first summer on staff at Morry’s Camp. She explained in the long message how she had wanted to tell me for so long the impact that I had on her life. She just wanted to tell me Thank You for always believing in her even when she was’nt being her best self. As I read the message over and over probably about 10 times or so, the thing that stood out to me the most is when she said ” Even when you were tellling me things I didnt want to hear, I know you genuinely care about me and my well being.” When I think about all the work I’ve done with children over the past 9 years now, especially children with behavioral issues or children going through crazy things at home, that statement seems so powerful to me. That statement let me know that even though sometimes those children acted like they were blocking me out or trying to be a distraction so I would’nt think they were paying attention, THEY HEARD ME. I think her letter did more for me than she will ever know. Her letter made me feel validated in the work that I do. Just one more thing that lets me know that I’m making a difference in this world. That’s all I’ve ever wanted.
